What's the role?

Northwestern Mutual’s Technology organization is at the forefront of enterprise-wide digital strategy. The Vice President, Software Engineering is a highly visible and impactful position which leads some of the most innovative areas of this strategy including the critical unification of our organization around our client journey and omni-channel servicing.

As VP of Software Engineering, you'll have a great opportunity to help Northwestern Mutual re-platform its legacy platform and usher this titan of American economy into the digital future. This is a critical role in the digital evolution of Northwestern Mutual and reports directly into the CTO. This person will lead the development teams that drive client digital experience, mobile and re-platforming of legacy client servicing apps. We are looking for a capable leader who has a background in both massive enterprise legacy modernizations, mobile app and web software development and someone who knows how to run high-performing teams and create an extraordinary engineering culture. The ideal person will be someone who can operate in strategic initiatives and deliver tactically while demonstrating strong analytical and leadership skills. This person will have a deep understanding of technology solutions and has demonstrated out of the box problem solving skills and innovative mindset.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Map out the vision for re-platforming our legacy systems to support Northwestern Mutual’s omni-channel client servicing strategy
  • Lead all engineering for our digital customer facing applications including websites, mobile apps, and other digital offerings to our clients
  • Be responsible for the overall planning, execution, and success of complex projects from the engineering side
  • Hire top talent, while evaluating and growing the existing team
  • Create a strong engineering culture of ownership, empowerment and learning
  • Evaluate and select the right technologies that provide both velocity, developer productivity and stability for the business
  • Work with the VP of architecture to ensure that all our products adopt a modular architecture with the right levels of abstraction
  • Ensure the highest quality of code by putting in place the right process and tools including unit tests, build acceptance testing etc.
  • Work with the VP of product management to ensure all software being developed meets product and design specifications
  • Help foster a culture of collaborative problem-solving within the agile teams so that we can achieve the right balance between value and cost while also delighting customers
  • Ensure that the team prioritizes business needs but also carves out time to reduce technical debt
  • Lead the technical roadmap for our products
  • Make sure software being developed meets Northwestern Mutual standards of security and privacy



Bring Your Best! What this role needs:



  • Must have a minimum of 15 years of experience in software engineering with minimum of 5 years leading a team and 3 years working on Cloud based technologies and SaaS solutions.
  • 10X technical chops and deep hands-on technical knowledge
  • Proven track record re-platforming massive legacy systems
  • Hands-on experience in development of Micro services and containerized application (Docker images or Kubernetes) with expertise in distributed cache and load balancing.
  • Validated experience with SOA, design patterns, web services technologies, APIs, Applications, Application Ecosystem, and Micro API's.
  • Extensive Experience with web services standards and related technologies (HTTP, XML, JSON, REST, SOAP, WS*) and authentication methods such as OAuth and SAML
  • Experience implementing continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) tools
  • Experience with data integration, data lake approaches, data architecture and ETL tools
  • Secure code development and security design
  • Experience implementing messaging or streaming services using Kafka or Rabbit MQ
  • Experience with AWS is a plus
