Northwestern Mutual is looking for an Editor to join our Content Team. In this position, you’ll get to write, assign and edit content for our website’s Life & Money content hub, as well as other areas where consumer-facing content is needed (email campaigns, content for clients, educational whitepapers, etc.). We’re looking for a strong ideas generator and an experienced assigning editor who can brainstorm, assign and line-edit high-quality content at a fast pace, as well as write when needed. Knowledge of personal finance is a plus, but what’s more important is the ability/willingness to research and learn about topics you’re unfamiliar with. Candidates will be asked to complete an edit test.

Responsibilities

  • Conceive, edit/write and package a variety of consumer-facing personal finance content. These can be anything from quick posts ranging from 200-500 words that put current events into context, to first-person essays, to longer financial-education service articles. You may also write or edit longer whitepapers that require more in-depth research and reporting. We pride ourselves on educating consumers on personal finance topics in a familiar yet authoritative tone.
  • Cultivate new freelance writing talent, coordinate assignments and manage deadlines among freelancers.
  • Route stories as needed through subject matter expert review, compliance and other business partners as needed.
  • Work with internal marketing business partners to develop or repurpose content for various distribution channels.
  • Other tasks as required by the editorial department, such as tracking invoicing/freelancer costs, managing edit calendars, publishing articles in our CMS, etc. We are a tight-knit team, and we’re seeking a strong team player who can work independently assigning and editing but can also pinch-hit on whatever task is needed. A jack-of-all-trades mentality is crucial. 

Skills/Requirements:

  • A bachelors degree in journalism, English or other communications-related field preferred, or relevant experience.
  • Proven writing and editing skills for a news or media outlet, or in content marketing for a brand. Familiarity with AP style preferred.
  • Organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated. Must understand the basic rules of journalism and how to report a story.
  • Comfortable working in a CMS, Drupal Hubspot or similar
  • Knowledge of basic SEO and analytics-tracking (e.g., Google Analytics) a plus.
  • Experience copy-editing and fact-checking; an excellent grammarian.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks on deadline.
  • Minimum 3 years experience.
