Northwestern Mutual Investment Products and Services (IPS) is our company’s rapidly growing investment management business; building on our customers’ trust, IPS is a $135B AUM “startup”, driving change across the organization. Our Technology unit is leading the way in transforming how technology is designed and used. In IPS we are reinventing ourselves, reinforcing our core values while embracing modern practices and cutting-edge technologies, to enable our business to grow at an unprecedented rate. We are looking for great people to help drive this transformation and shape our future.

Reporting to the CTO, the Director Solutions Engineering shapes the vision for technology in IPS, then champions that vision through architecture, technical designs, and coaching. They are constantly seeking the best solutions, learning and assessing new technologies, and evolving their view on where things are heading. They work in partnership with Product and Engineering teams, as well vendors and other groups across NM, to create an effective strategy for meeting the business’ needs. This role explores the bounds of what is possible, balances what is practical, then decides on a path and drives progress with hands on leadership. They are responsible for planning and supervising skilled architecture and development resources.  The Director will ensure development is prioritized and aligned to the business requirements and features, and in accordance with all standards.

The Director Solutions Engineering also holds responsibility for architecture, defining the long-term technology strategy of IPS. This role defines the “how” and “what” of day-to-day operations in IPS Engineering.

This person is comfortable dealing with ambiguity, and naturally builds structure to ensure the important things are being done well. They are comfortable engaging the C-suite, but go to the work at any level, and roll up their sleeves without a second thought.
