Cloud Architect

Northwestern Mutual is looking for enthusiastic technologists who are looking to take a leadership role in cloud native technology.  The Cloud Architect will have the opportunity to lead efforts across the entire Cloud and DevOps Division for engineering projects, problem-solving, and operational excellence.  They will collaborate in the architectural direction along with the Principal Engineers and provide continuous development of cloud platform capabilities while relying on advanced cloud infrastructure knowledge in problem-solving opportunities.  This role requires extensive public cloud experience and an exceptional level of enthusiasm for cloud-native technology with a proven track record of self-motivated accomplishment.  This is an exciting opportunity to build upon leadership experience in cloud computing. 


Proving designs from whiteboard to implementation is paramount.  Leveraging your knowledge of cloud computing trends and application design you will be able to lead architecture design sessions with a wide range of audiences while still being able to demonstrate development best practices when working hands-on with other engineers.


Apart from being a solid architect in cloud computing technology, the right candidate will demonstrate impeccable enterprise level behaviors and practices including architectural review, mentorship, scrum, documentation, release management, and end-user training.  In building platform capabilities and services, they will enable our development community to be self-sufficient, agile, and be able to operate as responsible consumers of the cloud.  The right candidate also has the ability to work beyond common conflicts experienced to transform the organization.  In DevOps, they will work through opposing goals and constraining circumstances. Combined with the technical chops, they will need to possess the drive and interpersonal skills to constantly evolve the team, the platform, and revolutionize the business.


About the Cloud Platform Team - The Northwestern Mutual public cloud platform experience is a multi-cloud native environment that is built on AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Ansible and other open source projects.  Our platforms are multi-tenant environments utilized to run mission-critical workloads at enterprise scale and are currently used by thousands of developers across hundreds of teams. 



  • Help lead cultural change for cloud adoption through developing and design cloud architectures.
  • Design for automation not only for the infrastructure but the components above as well.
  • Collaborate on technology roadmaps and designs for the Cloud Platform team.
  • Be informed on cloud computing infrastructure and application design trends across industries.
  • Practice defense in depth approach to system designs.
  • Be a technology leader & drive innovation by scouting opensource and commercial companies for new technologies, tools and quickly prototype to ensure that the platform is constantly evolving in its capability


Ideal Skills

  • Be able to combine cloud computing infrastructure design patterns with application architecture best practices.
  • Experience with provisioning via Infra as Code and designing around immutable infrastructure deployment models.
  • Hands-on experiencing deploying applications to a public cloud.
  • Proficiency within one of the following Languages (Python, Golang, JavaScript, Java)
  • Strong planning, documentation, and practices are required
  • Be able to whiteboard and demonstrate the implementation of elastic cloud-native architectures.
  • Ability to teach, mentor, and collaborate in a team environment. Articulate cloud concepts and reasons behind designs across many levels of the organization.
  • Experience in analyzing performance and availability metrics and deriving course of action to remediate issues and failures.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and being able to apply evolutionary architecture approaches to existing designs.
