What's the role?

As a Transformation Business Intelligence Lead at Northwestern Mutual, you will be developing a prioritization framework and process that determines strategic spend needed to deliver our client experience-led transformation which is part of the company’s long-term strategic direction.   This role will be part of the central transformation office and will work collaboratively with business areas, digital/technical teams, and finance to develop business cases and change proposals that show strong business value being delivered against the transformation plan.   The Transformation Business Intelligence Lead will be responsible for developing a multi-year financial plan and key performance indicators (KPIs) to track and monitor investment spend.    This role will work with research and data analytics teams at the company to provide strategic insights by performing customer research, benchmarking, competitive analysis and identifying high level financial implications of the transformation.   Proven leadership in visualization and reporting of complex financial and metric information in a way that can be easily understood and actionable is critical for this role. 


Principle Accountabilities:

  • Determines strategic spend allocation by developing prioritization framework and process for projects:
    • Develops business cases / change proposals to request for strategic funding from the Transformation Management Office
    • Performs prioritization and prepares strategic investment allocation proposal for the Senior Leadership Team
    • Develops a 3-4 year financial plan with high level KPIs to track and monitor investment spend
    • Creates ongoing financial reports for the Senior Leadership Team and the Board of Trustees   
  • Keeps leadership focused on value delivered from the cumulative result of all strategic initiatives in the client experience transformation portfolio.
    • Identifies leading and lagging KPIs to track and monitor results against customer & growth goals
    • Coordinates with multiple data engineering teams to create re-usable and scalable reporting sources of record
    • Publishes relevant dashboards / reports on an ongoing basis to communicate progress
    • Develops processes to source data and publishes relevant KPI dashboards / reports on an ongoing basis to communicate progress
  • Analyzes and determines data needs, identifies available internal and external sources of data, and integrates data from multiple sources to produce data elements. Utilizes the most advanced data modeling skills to design data integration and structure approaches.
  • Works with other research and insights teams to provides strategic insights by performing primary and secondary customer research, benchmarking, competitive analysis and identifying high level financial implications for transformation to support the long term strategic direction, Customer Experience (CX) vision and aspirations of the company.
  • Generates complex reports and datasets for senior leaders using system tools and database or data warehouse queries and scripts. Creates and maintains complex reports, ad hoc requests, dashboards, data generators and other end-user information portals or resources.
  • Conduct expert level data analysis and capture, develop, and document data definitions, business rules, and data quality requirements.
  • Interpret data, analyze results, and provide insights for senior technical leaders for use across analytics and business intelligence teams. Utilizes advanced analytical tools to perform quantitative analysis, identifies key insights, and highlights interesting findings and implications of analysis.
  • Collect, analyze, and validate data prior to it being stored for final use by organization.
  • Ensure data integrity, consistency and reliability by implementing quality assurance practice; performs quality data audits and analysis. Leads the Identification and implementation of improvements in data collection processes or systems.
  • Provides consultation to business clients (including senior leaders) and participates in enterprise-wide teams to address business issues. Works collaboratively with digital product office(s), budget and expense management, technology and other parts of the organization.
  • Applies new perspectives, creative problem solving, and inter-departmental connections to improve enterprise analytical capabilities.
  • Shares best practices with peers through coaching and mentoring around core methodologies, patterns, standards and processes.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, Mathematics, Statistics, Business or related field.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience with a proven track record in data analysis, reporting and application development.
  • Expertise in development and analytical tools such as SAS, SQL, MS Excel, SPSS or other tools. Visualization tooling like PowerBI or Tableau.
  • Proven ability to deliver results and recommendations in written, verbal and presentation form for at an appropriate level for all levels of business audiences.
  • Proven excellence in problem solving, primary and secondary customer research, quantitative analysis and analytical working techniques.
  • Demonstrated aptitude and desire for learning new platforms, development, analytic and presentation tools.
  • Expert level ability to gather information systematically; consider a broad range of issues or factors and use accurate logic in analysis.
  • Initiative to independently design and develop own deliverables while still being a team player.
  • Proven ability to lead decision making process through idea sharing and consensus building.
  • Proven ability to build rapport, negotiate, gain the confidence and work successfully with home office leaders in a variety of areas across the company.
  • Ability to generate new ideas and go beyond the status quo; recognize the need for new or modified approaches.
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring staff members required.
  • Proven management skills including negotiating, leadership, delegation, planning and organization
  • Proven track record in meeting aggressive deadlines
