Northwestern Mutual is looking for enthusiastic technologists who are looking to take an advanced role focused in Kubernetes and Container Management technology.  The Cloud Services Engineer will have the opportunity to lead efforts across the entire Cloud and DevOps Division for engineering projects, problem solving, and operational excellence.  They will collaborate in architectural direction along with the Principal Engineers and provide continuous development of cloud services capabilities while relying on advanced cloud infrastructure knowledge in problem solving opportunities.  This role requires extensive experience in Kubernetes and Container Management, and an exceptional level of enthusiasm of cloud native technology with a proven track record of self-motivated accomplishment.  This is an exciting opportunity to build upon leadership experience in cloud computing.

 

About the Cloud Platform Team - The Northwestern Mutual public cloud platform experience is a multi-cloud native environment that is built on AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Ansible and other open source projects.  Our platforms are multi-tenant environments utilized to run mission-critical workloads at enterprise scale and are currently used by thousands of developers across hundreds of teams. 

 

Accountabilities

  • Build and improve Kubernetes and Container Management capabilities and services while addressing a variety of technical needs & issues including automation/self-service, security concerns around identity & access, data protection, CICD security, high availability, monitoring, scalability, self-healing, and effective cost postures
  • Develop Infra as Code for platform capabilities and services using Terraform, Lambda, Kubernetes native deployments, & Docker for the entire Lifecycle of application and infrastructure
  • Lead in the execution and development of key projects and initiatives. Examples may include IaaS automation, cost management, security auto-remediation, IAM role, and policy management
  • Operate as a valued contributor of specific team tracks to plan, execute and release features and future capability
  • Be a technology leader & drive innovation by scouting the market for new technologies, tools and quickly prototype to ensure that the platform is constantly evolving in its capability

 

Ideal Skills

  • Experience with microservice orchestration technology such as Kubernetes, Mesos/Marathon, Openshift, etc.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of containerization technology
  • Mastery of traditional or cloud computing including Networking, Compute, Storage, Development, Data, Operations, or Security
  • Demonstrated advanced experience with Infra as Code concepts and tooling including Ansible, Terraform, Python, JSON, and YAML
  • Experience with modern deployment methodology and tooling
  • Advanced proficiency with modern development and scripting languages (Python, Golang, JS, .Net Core)
  • Strong planning, documentation and practices are required
  • Demonstrated implementation of high-availability concepts
  • Ability to teach, mentor, and collaborate in a team environment; Project tracks may include 5-7 engineers at a time
  • Experience in analyzing performance and availability metrics, and deriving course of action to remediate issues and failures
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills within area of expertise
