Senior Communications Specialist

What's the role?

The Senior Communications Specialist-Financial works with the Strategic Communications team to help develop and implement communications plans to support and advance corporate priorities. One focus area is financial communications – including Northwestern Mutual’s annual report, financial results, ratings announcements and news about the company’s general account investments. You’ll also work with a variety of business partners to understand business objectives, and then deliver communications strategies, events and experiences that inform and influence leader, employee, field and customer audiences. You’ll help define communication objectives, write key messages and stories, conceive and write assets (collateral, talking points, stories, videos, etc.), and determine delivery strategies through channels and experiences. What you do builds awareness and understanding with audiences and achieves positive impact for business outcomes. You’ll collaborate with colleagues to brainstorm innovative ideas. You’ll demonstrate effectiveness through program measurement and assessment. You’ll help with large-scale initiatives to support company priorities and increase engagement. Bring Your Best! What this role needs:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mass communications, journalism, public relations or related field that requires a demonstrated proficiency in writing, asset development and measurement.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in professional corporate communications, public relations, journalism or related communication field with a proven portfolio of business writing and media management.
  • Experience in corporate financial communications and/or retail investment products communications – including client communications about investment markets and/or products.  
  • Proactive professional who has ability to build rapport with business partners and colleagues, provide counsel, and develop productive working relationships at all levels.
  • Strong writer with ability to quickly grasp complex information, synthesize and distill concepts by writing for a variety of audiences. Strong verbal communications skills.
  • Versatility to learn about and work with a variety of business areas and topics.
  • Demonstrated experience with communication planning, objective setting, and key message development based on analysis of business problem/opportunities.
  • Highly organized with project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Passionate about problem-solving. Ability to question the status quo and develop innovative ways to advance business objectives through communications.
  • Requires knowledge of: theories of mass communication; best practices in organizational communication; theories of persuasion; media channel effectiveness; print, audio, video, and web-based production methods.
