What's the role?

Northwestern Mutual is looking for enthusiastic technologists who are looking to take a leadership role in cloud native technology.  The Senior Cloud DevOps Engineer will have the opportunity to lead transformational cloud efforts across the company. Senior Cloud Engineers are responsible for partnering with application teams, understanding their requirements, and aligning application design to established Cloud patterns.  They will partner in architectural direction along with the Principal Engineers and provide continuous development of cloud platform capabilities while relying on advanced cloud infrastructure knowledge in problem solving opportunities.  This role requires extensive public cloud experience and an exceptional level of customer focus with a proven track record of self-motivated accomplishment.  This is an exciting opportunity to build upon leadership experience in cloud computing. 

About the DevOps Enablement Team - The DevOps Enablement team is the center of Northwestern Mutual’s transformational cloud journey.  Our public cloud platform experience is a multi-cloud native environment that is built on AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Ansible and other open source projects.  Our team guides application teams in their journey to this new and exciting platform. 

Accountabilities

  • Lead in the execution and development of key projects and initiatives. 
  • Create application designs that align with established industry, enterprise cloud patterns. 
  • Review application architecture for adherence to company resiliency, security, and availability standards
  • Mentor junior engineers within platform
  • Create clear, succinct documentation and training materials
  • Build, improve, and reimagine platform capabilities and services while addressing a variety of technical needs & issues including automation/self-service, security concerns around identity & access, data protection, CICD security, high availability, monitoring, scalability, self-healing, and effective cost postures
  • Develop Infra as Code for platform capabilities and services using Terraform, Lambda, Kubernetes native deployments, & Docker for the entire Lifecycle of application and infrastructure

 

Ideal Skills

  • Knowledge of cloud computing including Networking, Compute, Storage, Development, Data, Operations, or Security
  • Demonstrated advanced experience with Infra as Code concepts and tooling including Ansible, Terraform, Python, JSON, and YAML
  • Proficiency with modern development and scripting languages (Python, Golang, JS, .Net Core)  Experience with Continuous Integration
  • Strong planning, documentation and practices are required
  • Demonstrated implementation of high-availability concepts
  • Ability to teach, mentor, and collaborate in a team environment. Teams may include 5-7 engineers at a time
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills within area of expertise.
