High Yield Corporate Research Associate

WHO WE ARE: The Public Investments Department within Northwestern Mutual Investment Management Company, LLC (NMIMC) manages the public markets investments of Northwestern Mutual, with more than $100 billion under management in Investment Grade Corporate, Structured Product, High Yield Corporate, Government, Municipal, Emerging Market and related Derivative assets.

 BASIC FUNCTION: This position will be responsible for covering and driving performance within assigned High Yield (HY) corporate bond industries.


  • While specific industry experience is not a requirement, current or historical experience in Energy or Banking & Financial sectors would be preferred
  • Candidates must have experience within the HY corporate asset class
  • Within assigned industries, the candidate must have the ability to provide well-articulated, forward-looking fundamental views and relative value assessments for covered companies
  • Candidates should have at least 2 years of experience in the credit markets
  • Provide timely evaluation of primary and secondary market offerings informed by fundamental and relative value views
  • Demonstrate the ability to formulate, communicate and influence investment recommendations to senior analysts and/or portfolio managers based on forward looking fundamental and relative value analysis
  • Prepare high quality, accurate and independent work product
  • Maintain strong, professional relationships with Wall Street contacts, rating agencies, buy-side accounts and issuer management teams
  • Regularly attend industry conferences, investor events and rating agency meetings
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to senior management on key issues, such as topical industry information, credit specific analysis, special project work, etc.
  • Use information technology to identify, develop and maintain tools that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the investment decision making process
  • Actively engage in Continuous Learning & Improvement (CL&I) initiatives
  • Exhibit a high level of integrity, trustworthiness, reliability and motivation
  • Promote a culture of mutual respect and courtesy
  • MBA or Master’s degree
  • CFA designation is preferred, or progress towards
  • 2+ years of asset management industry experience with ability to demonstrate track record of delivering research and investment ideas contributing to superior, risk adjusted results
  • Ability to develop and build relevant models and tools
  • Strong analytical, quantitative and critical reasoning skills
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail, ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
  • Works well independently, while promoting and contributing to a strong team dynamic
  • High ethical and professional standards
  • Knowledge of Blackrock Aladdin is desirable
  • Proficiency with Bloomberg, Microsoft Power BI, Database systems and tools is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of machine learning and/or predictive analytics applications for use in credit research is
    highly desirable
  • This position is subject to our Personal Trading Policy and the employee will be required to
    maintain any brokerage accounts with one of NMIMC’s approved brokers.
