What's the role?

  • Lead teams of platform (and platform operations) engineers
    • Build and maintain the middleware platforms.
      • i.e. kafka new messaging platform being designed/built and operationalized for consumption
      • i.e. Maintaining the Pure appliances
      • Make sure the Platform is highly available
    • Maintain relationships with application technical lead and pods lead (consumers of platform)
      • Determine needs of the market
      • Bring back knowledge, patterns, use cases and disseminate across the organization (other pods).
      • Never recreate the wheel, always create visibility into what capabilities exists within the platform for consumption.
    • Manage all vendor costs, contracts, roadmaps, selection – based on input from “customers”
    • Ensuring standards across the Organization/Pods are met for usage of the platform
    • Enabling teams through coaching and training. Providing training materials, documentations, courses, etc.
    • New capability research and capabilities. Forward looking.
    • Provide support on complex issues that pod engineers need help solving.
    • Have active engagement (provide consultation and ensure overall delivery i.e. have the platform level plan) with pods to ensure that execution for application dependent upgrades is occurring per the roadmaps of the platform.
    • Responsible: Create automation template, standards (i.e. monitoring), artifact management (i.e. source code management).
    • Auditing the pods to ensure deployments are within conformance of platform standards.
    • Create the modernization path to the cloud for the Platform
    • Lead teams of engineers accountable for platform operations (staff that run the operations for the shared platforms i.e. Pure App)
    • Execute audits across the platform. i.e. Bi-annual MAR audit
    • Execute Any platform level patching and life cycle management
    • Responsible for communication is taking place across “guilds” within the pods.
    • Project Manage upgrades that span across the entire Platform and not specific to any one application, i.e. Appliance patching/upgrades/life cycle management.
    • Financial Management of the platform
    • Secure funding in alignment with platform engineering’s roadmap
    • Staffing, rotations and hiring to ensure success and individual happiness
    • Align individual goals with corporate strategy
    • Provide dedicated resources to pods if a temporary need to scale exists, i.e. need an engineer for a 6 month spike in work to modernize an application set.
