INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW

It clears the way for inspiration, innovation, and your impact to take hold.  Program objectives provide the intern with hands-on experiences through teamwork and collaboration, as well as individual work assignments.  Interns participate in a wide range of learning and development activities including job shadows, attending various speaking engagements and events designed to expose interns to other areas of the firm. Interns also have an opportunity to network with senior leaders across the firm, attend various social and work-sponsored events and are encouraged to engage in team volunteer opportunities within the community. 

What's the role?

A Communications Intern will be assigned to one division.  The specific responsibilities within each division will vary but basic responsibilities for all Communications Interns may include:

  • Developing an understanding of the important role of communications in the rapidly evolving business landscape and financial services industry.
  • Provide writing, researching, graphic design and editorial support. 

     

Additional responsibilities of each division are as follows:

   

Public and Media Relations: Drive brand awareness and advance your research, interviewing, writing, networking and organizational skills in the fast-paced, deadline-oriented, relationship-based environment of the Communications team of Northwestern Mutual. Work with multiple Communications department team members to sharpen your editorial skills, write stories, news releases, media pitching and provide administrative support for various electronic and print media channels.

Basic Function: Contribute to the development of external communications, which may include:

  • Writing, researching, graphic design and editorial support for traditional media outreach and social media channels. 
  • Tracking, analyzing and reporting on team metrics.
  • Fact checking, copy editing and proofing during the media production process.
  • Supporting other home office and field channels, including audio/video centers.

 

Strategic Communications - Corporate: Advance your writing, communication planning, project management, execution, networking and organizational skills in the fast-paced corporate communications environment at Northwestern Mutual. Work with multiple Communications department team members to sharpen your editorial skills, write stories for publication, help plan and execute companywide events, and provide added support for wide-ranging projects and digital channels.

Basic Function: Contribute to the development and execution of internal communications plans and content, which may include:

  • Research, write and publish news stories for internal Northwestern Mutual audiences (5,600+ employees and contractors).
  • Write, edit and review copy for other communication deliverables.
  • Help execute a variety of companywide experiences and events designed to engage employees in building our future together.
  • Help establish and manage project details such as production schedules and materials delivery.
  • Support the communications team as needed in a variety of hands-on roles and projects.

 

 

Position Hours:  Full-time (40 hours per week) during summer, with potential to work part-time (20 hours per week) during the school year.

 

Bring Your Best! What this role needs:

  • Rising Junior and Seniors preferred with a Corporate Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Mass Communications, English or related major
  • Strong research, interviewing and writing skills.
  • High degree of copy editing accuracy using the AP Stylebook.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to meet multiple deadlines.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Experience with InDesign, DreamWeaver and PhotoShop a plus.
