INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Northwestern Mutual Internship experience is about the opportunity. It is without barriers, without ego — where feedback is essential, and collaboration is second nature. It clears the way for inspiration, innovation, and your impact to take hold.  Program objectives provide the intern with hands-on experiences through teamwork and collaboration, as well as individual work assignments.  Interns participate in a wide range of learning and development activities including job shadows, attending various speaking engagements and events designed to expose interns to other areas of the firm. Interns also have an opportunity to network with senior leaders across the firm, attend various social and work-sponsored events and are encouraged to engage in team volunteer opportunities within the community. 

What's the role?

Advance your research, interviewing, writing, networking and organizational skills in the fast-paced, deadline-oriented, relationship-based environment of the Field Communications and Engagement teams of Northwestern Mutual. Work with multiple Communications department team members to sharpen your editorial skills, write stories, email and other promotional copy and provide administrative support for various electronic and print media channels. Develop an understanding of the important role of communications in the rapidly evolving financial industry.

 

Basic Function: Contribute to the development of communications content for our internal workforce and sales force, which may include:

  • Writing, researching, graphic design and editorial support for our digital publications and social media channels. 
  • Tracking, analyzing and reporting on content and channel metrics.
  • Fact checking, copy editing and proofing content.
  • Writing and editorial support for our quarterly news magazine – for 7,000+ Northwestern Mutual financial representatives.

 

Position Hours:  15-20 hours per week during the school year; 40 hours per week during summer.

 

Bring Your Best! What this role needs:

  • Rising Junior or Senior standing in journalism, public relations, mass communications, marketing, English or related major.
  • Solid research, interviewing and news writing skills.
  • High degree of copy editing accuracy using AP Stylebook.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to meet multiple deadlines.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Strong experience with social media.
  • Graphic design skills are preferred.
