Assistant Director - Leadership Development

What's the role?

This team in Talent Management oversees the talent pipeline which includes leadership development, diversity & inclusion and recruiting for Northwestern Mutual’s career agency distribution system, i.e. our financial representatives. Leadership Development is responsible for programs in support of the national distribution system in efforts growing new, high-potential and tenured leaders. As we grow as a team, our goals include building a comprehensive leadership program that enables growth and development of our distribution system. 


Principal Accountablilities:

  • Part of a team accountable for the design, development and implementation all field leadership programming and experiences from new leader to Managing Partner, including development of high potentials, to enable leaders to achieve success in their current leadership role and prepare them for advancement to higher levels of leadership in the future. 
  • Ensure all leadership programs support and align to our strategy and leadership behavior model
  • Maintain, evolve and teach NM’s leadership model, enlisting leaders to develop and then coach/role model the needed capabilities to realize our vision
  • Facilitate collaborative process with field and home office stakeholders, subject matter experts, target audience members, and leaders to identify critical outcomes and measurement strategy
  • Conceptualize, storyboard and gain agreement on the big picture of the program on how leaders and their teams will benefit.
  • Collaborate with Learning & Development to document instructional strategy and curriculum components required to achieve desired outcomes, including performance support strategies
  • Develop and/or source content and facilitate between formal learning and performance support on-the-job
  • Work effectively with field leaders and home office leadership to establish and sustain an effective talent-multiplier culture that supports strong leadership skills at all levels of the organization and enables high potential leaders to advance their careers
  • Establish leadership metrics and leverage them to report business results and secure support to further develop and evolve leadership programs to ensure relevance and contemporary learning experiences
  • Keeps abreast of industry-wide innovations and thought leaders and advises on industry-wide best practices and bring external thinking to the group.
  • Serves as the liaison with other members of Talent regarding leadership programs and related solutions.
  • Manage vendors and contingent staff both directly and indirectly who support leadership programs; provides feedback and direction when collaborating with less senior team members.

Bring Your Best! What this role needs:

  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis on, Instructional Systems, Organizational Development, Business or Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Human Resources or relevant expereince.
  • Expertise in contemporary adult learning principles and models, curriculum construction and facilitation with demonstrated ability to be creative, flexible, and innovative in the design of experiential learning and retention
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with executive stakeholders and faculty, subject matter experts, and various levels of target audiences to analyze and identify business leadership needs and gaps and determine a future course of action, while enlisting stakeholder support
  • Experience developing leaders throughout the leadership and talent pipeline (aspiring new leaders to C-suite), including exposure and experience with leadership development content, technology and tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently formulate an idea by leveraging strong business knowledge and acumen, outside-in perspective and an enterprise mindset.
  • Creativity and strong conceptual and systems thinking skills with ability to make connections
  • Strong business acumen and organizational perspective to leverage context/community of practice to drive results
  • Strong consulting skills; including the ability to lead, direct, negotiate and influence with and without direct authority at all levels of the organization; strong ability to manage stakeholders
  • Experience with establishing measurement of leadership development program success
  • Strong ability to communicate and listen to others
  • Strong understanding of multiple areas of Talent and Organization Development including organizational design, team building, performance management, succession planning or employee engagement.
